Meet the New Chrysler Delta…but it’s not for U.S., it’s for the U.K.

Chrysler Delta 131 450x243 Meet the New Chrysler Delta…but its not for U.S., its for the U.K.

Do you remember the Chrysler-badged Delta hatchback that made a surprise appearance at the Detroit motor show in 2010?

Well, the Chrysler Group has presented the final production version but it is not for U.S. consumption. Instead, the Delta will be offered in the United Kingdom where all Lancia products will be marketed under the Chrysler brand.

The only changes made to the original Lancia model, which was recently updated with a new front grille, concern the Chrysler badges inside and out.

Available engine options will include a choice of two 1.4-liter units delivering 120HP and 140HP, and 120HP 1.6-liter or 200HP 2.0-liter turbo diesels delivering up to 61.4mpg UK combined (equal to 51.1mpg US or 4.6lt/100km) and emissions as low as 120g/Km.

Sales of the Chrysler Delta are expected to start in the UK shortly.

Chrysler to pass on stretched 300, cedes livery market to Lincoln

Chrysler won’t be stretching the company’s new 300 for livery service anytime soon. According to Automotive News, the automaker isn’t interested in locking horns with Lincoln in the limousine business. The reason? Chrysler built a long-wheelbase 300 once before and the vehicle didn’t exactly leap off of lots and into chauffeur fleets. Part of the lackluster demand came from the fact that the old 300 had to be shipped to a separate company for livery modification, making it more expensive in the process. Chrysler says that since there isn’t an overwhelming demand for the elongated 300, there isn’t much of a business case for its creation.

That pretty much leaves Lincoln to take the livery market by default despite the fact that the long-reigningTown Car is on its way to the grave. The company has said that it plans to use the MKT crossover to replace the old Panther platform cars, though it remains to be seen if livery customers will embrace the notion of adopting the baleen-faced high rider.

Chrysler 200 nameplate a stopgap?

In redesigning the Chrysler Sebring, the decision-makers at Team Pentastar wanted to give the vehicle sort of a fresh start, and opted to rename the car “200.” Sure, the new 200 may look a lot like its forsaken forefather, but early returns show that the sedan and convertible have gained back a measure of respect – and sales, to boot.

But while the 200 has been an improvement, the The Detroit Bureau reports that the next-generation Chryslermid-size sedan will not carry the numeric moniker. Chrysler and Fiat have long asserted that the long-term replacement to the 200 will feature Fiat architecture, and The Bureau says the designs are frozen and a names have already been chosen.

This doesn’t mean that the 200 nameplate is history, however. If Chrysler does decide to change the name of the 200, it will lose the momentum it created for the name with the infamous Eminem Super Bowl commercial. Further, another new advertising campaign to introduce a new name will likely cost many millions of dollars. But if Chrysler wants to forever disassociate itself from the Sebring, changing the name one more time may be the right thing to do.

Chrysler finally gets a compliment from Consumer Reports

Hide your kids, hide your wife, hide your husband. One of the four-horsemen of the apocalypse has officially arrived. Consumer Reports has gone and paid Chrysler a compliment by saying that the 2011 Durango andCharger are the company’s most-improved models and, on the whole, the automaker’s cars are getting better. CR even awarded both the V6 and V8-powered Dodge Durango a “Very Good” road test score, putting it in contention with the likes of the 2011 Ford Explorer. The 2011 Dodge Charger Rallye also nabbed a “Very Good” rating, which is comparable to the 2011 Ford Taurus and 2011 Buick Lacrosse.

Even the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan walked away with the honor of a “Very Good” designation, but things aren’t all lollipops and rainbows. Consumer Reports says that its testers were unimpressed with models like the 200, Avenger, Compass, Journey and Patriot, calling the vehicles mediocre.

Chrysler PT Cruiser RT/10 pickup

Over the years, Chrysler has built some awesome cars, and some… less than awesome. In one corner sits the Dodge Viper, that V10-powered beast of a car that arguably more aptly demonstrated the blue blood running through Auburn Hills’ veins more than anything else in the company’s history. In the other, the rather unfortunate Chrysler PT Cruiser, a retro hatch that may have demonstrated some originality when it first came out, but by its demise had long since outworn whatever charm it may have had in the first place.

The solution? Why, a marriage of the two, of course! One of only two reportedly built, this PT Cruiser featured some rather extensive modifications. For one, it did away with the rear doors and hatch back in favor of an enclosed pickup bed to give it a similar profile to the Chevrolet SSR. But as you might have guessed, that wasn’t the end of it. Not by a longshot.

The builders also replaced the PT’s four-banger with a V10 engine from a Dodge Viper. Now, the 500-horsepower 8.3-liter engine didn’t come along until the 2003MY Viper, but given that this vehicle was said to have been built in 2000, we’ll have to assume it’s the original 8.0 tuned up a little. Although the notion that it was built more recently – say, after 2005 when the PT Cruiser convertible was introduced – seems a distinct possibility.

Along with the engine, the builders also transplanted the Viper’s six-speed gearbox, rear suspension, steering rack and more. It’s up for grabs now on eBay Motors, with bids standing – reserve unmet – at $12,322 as we went to press.
