Mitsubishi's Lancer Sportback "Birds and Bees" TV Ad too Spicy for Toddlers

In Europe, Mitsubishi has no problem being a tad provocative when it comes to getting the attention of buyers. As the company itself admits, even its vehicle names have turned a few heads, such as the ‘FQ’ badges to be found on the ‘F***ing Quick’ Lancer Evolution range. Now, Mitsubishi has readied a new spicy and in our opinion, humorous TV advert for the Lancer, called “Bees and Birds.” The ad is due to air in the UK on Monday 9th February.

According to Mitsubishi, Clearcast, the company that is responsible for the pre-transmission examination and clearance of UK TV advertisements, has not approved the ad to be shown on TV before 9 o’clock. It goes without saying that Mitsubishi’s intention was to create a bit of a buzz with the advert.

Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi’s Director of Sales and Marketing said that, “Clearcast thought that the light-hearted innuendo throughout the ad could be seen as inappropriate – especially for younger viewers. We are happy to have the TV ad shown after the 9 o’clock watershed.”

Taking pride of place on the Mitsubishi stand at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show will be the i MiEV SPORT ‘AIR’ concept, a proposal for a miniature-sized, all-electric zero CO2 emission sports car. As its name suggests, the prototype is based on Mitsubishi’s i MiEV, an all-electric version of the ‘i’ minicar. Details are still scarce, but Mitsubishi did note that the sporty concept with the clear removable top will sport a more powerful electric motor than its citycar sibling.

Mitsubishi's European Sales Plummet 18 Percent

sxy59z Mitsubishi's European Sales Plummet 18 Percent
The year that passed proved to be very difficult for automakers around the globe, so we can’t say that we are surprised with Mitsubishi’s latest announcement that concerns its European sales. For the calendar year 2008, in the 33 European countries that it operates, Mitsubishi’s sales decreased by 18% to 164,462 units versus 2007 (200,045 units). The firm’s large SUV sales were among the hardest hit with the Pajero/Montero/Shogun losing 46% and the L200 25%.

However, even Mitsubishi’s best selling Euro model, the sub-compact Colt hatch, saw its sales decline by 20,6% to 53,435 units from 67,328 units in 2007. The Japanese automaker believes though that it will win back customers this year with the introduction of the facelifted Colt that was revealed at the Paris Show last October.

New Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart with 1.5 Turbo Debuts Aside Colt Facelift

Mitsubishi Colt facelift 0+ New Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart with 1.5 Turbo Debuts Aside Colt Facelift
Thanks to a set of images that had made their way into the web ahead of the Paris Show, we knew what to expect from the facelift Colt. What we didn’t know is that Mitsubishi replaced the outgoing Colt CZT with a Ralliart version that will be available for the first time in Europe, in both three-door and five-door variant. All 2009 Colts get a new fascia with Mitsubishi’s shark-like grille along with a redesigned bumper and oddly shaped headlamps that bring it inline with the latest Mitsubishi models.

At the rear, the 3door version gets darker taillights and a new bumper while the 5door also features newly styled tailamps. New wheels complement the new exterior design, including dark finish dual 5-spokes for the two Ralliart variants.

Inside, changes for the 2009 models include a new instrument panel, redesigned controls for the a/c, a Lancer inspired steering wheel and a new graining for the black upper padding of the dashboard together with higher quality seat material.

In parallel to the existing petrol engines (1.1 / 75ps, 1.3 / 95ps, 1.5 / 109ps), Mitsubishi will introduce new “low CO2” variants of the facelifted Colt, under the name of “Clear Tec”. These variants will feature amongst other things, start and stop and regenerative braking technologies, leading to an improvement of over 10% in terms of CO2 emissions.

Despite its promising name, the Colt Ralliart has retained the basic features of the outgoing Colt CZT including the 150HP 1.5-liter turbo engine which is no match for its European counterparts like the new Seat Ibiza Cupra or the Renault Clio RS just to mention a few.

Mitsubishi claims that compared to the previous Colt CZT and in addition to a stronger structure, the Colt Ralliart suspension has been amended in eight different points for sharper driving dynamics, including reduced body roll thanks to a thicker front stabilizer bar.

Depending upon the market and except for the Clear Tec variants which will be introduced in 2009, the next generation Colt will be launched in Europe
