Mitsubishi Small Crossover: Official Designs Show the Less Exciting Nature of the Production Model

2011 Mitsubishi Small Crossover 0 Mitsubishi Small Crossover: Official Designs Show the Less Exciting Nature of the Production Model
Remember how promising Mitsubishi’s all-new small crossover looked in the teaser sketch that was released back in October? Well, if these official designs are of any indication, then the reality is that the as-yet unnamed crossover won’t be as near as exciting as Mitsubishi wanted us to believe. On the other hand, the production model does retain most of the styling cues featured on the 2007 Mitsubishi cX concept, on which it is based, with most changes concerning the rear end of the car that appears to have grown in length.

Leaving the styling aside, Mitsubishi’s baby crossover uses the Japanese firm’s mid-size global platform, which also forms the basis the Lancer and Outlander. However, the new model will be smaller than the Outlander and will compete, at least in Europe, against Nissan’s forthcoming Quazana crossover.

Power will come from four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines including Mitsubishi’s new 1.8-liter turbocharged that made 136 horsepower and 280 Nm of peak torque in the 2007 cX concept.

The new crossover is scheduled to go on sale in Japan next February, and in Europe and other markets, in the summer of 2010.

This is an official sketch of Mitsubishi’s new compact crossover model that will go on sale first in Japan in February 2010 with Europe and other markets following in the summer of the same year. It is derived from the Concept-cX show car that was revealed at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany and it is based on Mitsubishi’s mid-size global platform that also underpins the Outlander and Lancer models.

The concept measured 4.1m (161.4-in.) in length, 1.75m in width and 1.55m in height with a 2.52m long wheelbase, but the production model is believed to slightly grow in size.

The small crossover model, which will compete head on with Nissan’s forthcoming production version of the Qazana, will be the firm’s first model to receive Mitsubishi’s new 1.8-liter diesel engine with a variable geometry (VG) turbocharger that delivered 136 horsepower and 280 Nm of peak torque in the concept. It will most likely be offered in two- and four-wheel drive variants.

The European premiere of the model will take place at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show next March. It remains to be seen if the small crossover will also make its way across the Atlantic.

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT with EVO's S-AWC: Full Image Gallery and Pricing of Top-End Model

Along with the introduction of the rest of the 2010 Outlander facelift range, Mitsubishi’s U.S. division also uncovered the top-of-the-line GT model which is based on the New York Show Outlander GT prototype that previewed the redesigned model earlier this year. And while Mitsubishi didn’t stick with the prototype’s lower exterior trim finish, 19-inch O.Z. alloys, aluminum roof finish and the specific three-spoke steering wheel, what it did keep on the production GT is a version of the Lancer EVO X’s S-AWC or Super All-Wheel Control system.

The S-AWC system uses an active front limited-slip differential and an electronically controlled four-wheel drive coupling to prevent wheel slip between front to rear and side-to-side thus improving handling, traction and stability.

The 2010 Outlander GT also gets 18-inch alloy wheels, enhanced interior trim with leather seats and an available full leather treatment for the dashboard, sport seats, alloy pedals, a multi color 3.5-inch LCD between the gauges, a sunroof and an upgraded 710-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Just like the 2010 Outlander XLS, the GT benefits from the tweaked 3.0-liter V6 engine that gets a 10-horsepower bump for 2010, now producing 230HP at 6,250 rpm and 204 lb-ft of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is transfered to the wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters.

The new Outlander GT is priced in the U.S. from $29,250 (excluding destination and handling fees).

Tokyo '09: Mitsubishi PX-MiEV Plug-in Hybrid SUV Concept gets 118mpg

Mitsubishi PX MiEV Concept 000 Tokyo '09: Mitsubishi PX MiEV Plug in Hybrid SUV Concept gets 118mpg
Highlighting Mitsubishi’s efforts to catch up to its domestic rivals in hybrid technology at this year’s Tokyo Show is the PX-MiEV, a compact sized four-wheel drive crossover fitted with a 1.6-liter petrol engine and two electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the rear. At low to medium speeds the PX-MiEV can rely on the front and if necessary, the rear electric motor also to motivate the vehicle. At higher speeds the gasoline engine, which is also used to generate electricity for the electric motors, kicks in to help power the crossover.

The PC-MiEV is equipped with battery pack that can be replenished through regenerative breaking, the gasoline engine, a regular household plug or a high-power quick-charging station. In electric-only mode, the PX-MiEV has a range of 30 miles or about 50km.

The Japanese firm said that the PX-MiEV is good for 117.6mpg US which come to around 2.0 lt/100km or 141mpg UK.

Redesigned 2010 Outlander with EVO Facsia Teased on Mitsubishi's U.S. Website

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander 0 Redesigned 2010 Outlander with EVO Facsia Teased on Mitsubishi's U.S. Website
We can’t say that we’re surprised, but while Mitsubishi has yet to issue an official release on its archaic and infrequently updated U.S. media site, the facelifted 2010 Outlander has made its appearance on the company’s public website… As with the Chinese and Australian market versions of the compact SUV, the U.S.-spec 2010 Outlander gains a newly designed front fascia with different headlamps, reshaped bumper, hood and front fenders along with a “jet fighter” look grille that brings the vehicle’s styling in line with the brand’s latest models.

There’s no word if the U.S. market model benefits from any other cosmetic tweaks, mechanical upgrades or equipment improvements, but what we do know is that, according to the company’s website, the 2010 Outlander will go on sale in the States in November.

Unless Mitsubishi decides at some point to share any information with the press, we’ll probably have to head over to one of the firm’s dealers to find out more on the ’10 Outlander…
