VW design chief says new Microbus is in the cards

vwmicrobus630 450x272 VW design chief says new Microbus is in the cards

It’s time to dust off the periodic dream of a new Volkswagen Microbus. The UK’s Auto Express reports that Klaus Bischoff, chief designer for the Volkswagen brand, thinks a new version of the classic Camper is a fundamental part of his job. This rumor has come around before, and the New Beetle’s ten-year run might help underscore the business case for a revival.

There were plans to offer a production version of the 2001 Microbus concept that made a splash at that year’s Detroit Motor Show, but cost considerations put an end to that project. A new Microbus is back on, according to Bischoff, and Volkswagen is trying to figure out how conventional or creative to go. VW’s design offices across the globe are being asked for their input to develop a vehicle with wide influence, and platforms and powertrains are up in the air. If this rumor sticks, we’re likely to see a concept in 2012.

Report: Volkswagen planning hotter Jetta R

03vwjetta2011fd 450x283 Report: Volkswagen planning hotter Jetta R

According to a report from Autocar, Volkswagen will be offering a performance-oriented R version of its sixth-generation Jetta. The automaker has already launched its Golf R and Scirocco R overseas, and VW has long said that it plans to expand its performance offerings around the world.

Volkswagen reportedly showed European media a version of the Jetta equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 during the car’s official launch last week. No power numbers were divulged, but Autocar states that a six-speed dual-clutch transmission was fitted to this Jetta, as was 4Motion all-wheel drive.

Ulrich Hackenberg, VW’s head of research and development, says that the Jetta R is being heavily considered and that if customer demand is there, it will be produced (sounds familiar, doesn’t it?). If the Jetta R does see the light of day, we’re willing to bet that it will come to North American soil, especially since the United States is the new Jetta’s key market. Here’s hoping.

2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid to start at $60,565

2011vwtouareghybridfd01opt 450x298 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid to start at $60,565

After putting the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid through the wringer (meaning: we assessed it for our first drive), we dubbed it, “a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid for the people.” Why’d we compare it to a Porsche? Well, the Touareg Hybrid shares its supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and its all-wheel-drive system with the Porsche model, so comparisons between the two should be expected. However, the Cayenne Hybrid, with a base price of $67,700, is too expensive for our tastes, and we’d venture to guess that it’s priced beyond the reach of many American buyers as well.

No problem, this would be where the Touareg Hybrid steps in. Or so we thought. We anticipated that VW’s hybrid would be the bargain of the two, and therefore, bring the goods of the Cayenne Hybrid to “the people.” We were expecting the hybrid model to command a premium north of the $44,350 price tag on the currentTDI Touareg, but how far north remained unknown until now. Volkswagen has revealed the Touareg’s base price, and it’s a whopping $60,565, plus $820 in destination fees. With a wallet-crunching MSRP like that, the 20 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway Touareg Hybrid will likely struggle to appeal to “the people.” We’ll stop short of calling the Touareg Hybrid a failure, but with Porsche’s version priced within spitting distance, we’re struggling to think of any reason why buyers should opt for the VW. If it were our coin on the line, we’d go with the less pricey Touareg TDI.

Volkswagen launches Exclusive upgrades for redesigned Eos

web630 e377ea0e800330 450x218 Volkswagen launches Exclusive upgrades for redesigned Eos

Volkswagen’s campaign to move upmarket has been unrelenting. Between the likes of the Phaeton and theCC, the German automaker is not shying away from taking on BMW and Mercedes-Benz, or even its sister-company Audi, for that matter. VW’s new Exclusive line does its part, too, upgrading existing models with some extra lux touches for those interested in a touch of added refinement.

The Touareg – another fine example of the luxurification of the People’s Car – was the most recent to get the Exclusive treatment, and now VW has turned its attention to the newly refreshed Eos. Not only has the hard-top cabrio received a facelift and an engine swap, but now the Exclusive department has upgraded it with two-tone Nappa leather offset by aluminum and piano black trim, a new steering wheel and restyled door sills. The optional sport suspension comes standard on the Exclusive model, and buyers can choose from two 18-inch wheel designs. Pricing in Europe, where the Eos has been rolled out prior to its debut in other markets, starts at €35,275 (around $50,000 based on current exchange rates, not that those figures are comparable).

Report: VW to build stretched version of new Passat in China

2011 passat swb 450x277 Report: VW to build stretched version of new Passat in China

China is getting its own version of the new Passat, and, big surprise, it’s going to have a stretched wheelbase. China Car Times is reporting that the embiggened version of the next generation Passat will be 120mm (about 4.5 inches) longer than the sedan other markets will receive to allow for a roomier back seat.

The stretched version of the Passat makes sense because in the Chinese market, there exists a bigger group of customers more eager to be driven in luxury than to have a vehicle that is fun to drive. And since V-Dub’s sedan is used in China as a livery vehicle, the extra 4.5 inches will come in handy. The stretch Passat, which will be built in China, will reportedly arrive in dealerships early in 2011.
